In order to properly carry out macronutrient grouping, you need to know what I mean by a protein and fat meal. Protein and fat meals are mostly protein and fat with very few carbs. To be considered a protein and fat meal I typically shoot for 10 grams or less of carbohydrates.
Some foods that have plenty of protein but are very low carb are:
- chicken
- beef
- fish
- nuts (almonds are the best)
- eggs
Even though vegetables are technically carbs they can always be added to protein and fat meals because they are mostly fiber and don’t cause your insulin to spike like other carbs.
Some good sample P+F meals are:
- Chicken, Steak or Fish with vegetables
- Eggs any way you like them
- 30-50 nuts makes a great snack
When I’m out at a restaurant I typically eat protein and fat meals because it’s always tough to tell how much oil or butter is added (hint: it’s usually a lot). But it’s generally easy to see the carbs in your meal (be careful though because sweet sauces tend to have some sugar). As a result at restaurants I usually order some meat dish and either don’t eat the rice or potatoes that typically come with it or ask for additional vegetables instead.

I am curious about sources of protein without fat, that you could group with carbs for a protein/carb meal. What type of carbs would you recommend?
That’s a good question. Check out the recent blog post on protein and carb meals for some suggestions.
