What do I mean by a protein and carb meal? Protein and carb meals are mostly protein and carbohydrates with very little fat. I typically shoot for 5 grams or less of fat in my protein and carb meals.
Some foods that have plenty of protein but very little fat are:
- chicken breasts
- skim milk
- nonfat yogurt
- egg whites
- cottage cheese (low fat or non fat)
- whey powder
Some foods that have carbohydrates but very little fat to go with your protein foods are:
- whole wheat bread
- granola
- oatmeal
- whole grain pasta
- fruit
- vegetables
I try to stay away from processed grain and anything with enriched flower because those foods aren’t good for you and will hinder you in your six pack goals. These foods with processed grains are white breads, regular pasta, and most types of crackers (try to stay away from them).
I also tend to away from starchy foods such as potatoes because your body breaks down these foods into sugar very quickly. As a result eating a potato is not that much healthier than eating pure sugar.
Some good sample P+C meals are:
- Chicken breast sandwhich on whole grain bread
- nonfat yogurt and granola
- oatmeal with a scoop of protein powder
- cottage cheese low fat or no fat
It’s always a good idea to add fruits and vegetables to any of these meals.
For your P+C meals you want to stay away from any added fat so don’t add butter and oils. When in doubt put your meal in Lose It and see how many grams of fat it has. If you get less than 5 grams you are good to go.
P+C meals are great post or pre-workout meals because during and after your workouts, your body is primed to absorb carbohydrates and store them as glycogen in your muscles rather than as fat.
